From temp worker to a permanent contract in automotive

Many mechanics stay stuck in temp agency arrangements for years while dealers are eager for permanent staff. Here's how you switch over, without the hassle.

From temp worker to a permanent contract in automotive

Every week we speak to mechanics who’ve been working through a temp agency for three, four or five years. Often at the same dealer. They do the same work as their colleagues on permanent contracts, but without the security, without the training and usually for less money. That doesn’t have to be the case.

Why dealers prefer to hire you directly

A temp worker costs a dealer more per hour than a permanent mechanic. The margin goes to the agency. Dealers know that, but they take on temp workers because they need someone quickly. As soon as they can get a good permanent person, they almost always choose that instead.

What you’re missing out on as a temp worker

  • Brand training and certifications that the dealer pays for permanent staff
  • Pension accrual under the Motor Vehicles collective labour agreement (cao)
  • Growth towards first mechanic or technical specialist
  • Certainty when applying for a mortgage

How to go about it

Step 1: know what you’re worth

Ask around about what permanent colleagues in the same role earn. Check the cao table for your job level. If you apply through us, we’ll tell you what dealers in your region pay.

Step 2: apply directly

You can ask your current dealer for a permanent contract, but there’s often a non-compete clause or a transfer fee built into the temp contract. It’s usually easier to go and work for a different dealer instead. We only place people into direct contracts, so you go straight onto the employer’s payroll.

Step 3: get guidance

Applying as a temp worker feels different from applying for a permanent job. You’ll be asked more about your plans and your motivation. We go through the conversation with you beforehand.

What it delivers

A mechanic we guided last year went from €2,650 as a temp worker to €3,200 on a permanent contract, plus a paid EV certification. Same work, twenty kilometres down the road.

Start with the job check

Fill in what you can do and where you live. Within a few days we’ll show you which dealers near you are looking for permanent staff. It costs you nothing and you’re not tied to anything.
